She passed away in 2005, but her love for the Knysna forest lives on through her writing. One of her favourite research spots was Krisjan se Nek, near Rheenendal, outside Knysna.

In 2008, a memorial to Daleen Matthee was unveiled near an 880-year-old Yellowwood tree, now known as the “Daleen Matthee Big Tree”. The area is also home to the Kringe in die Bos hiking trail, allowing visitors to walk in the footsteps of the author. In her books, Daleen drew attention to the mysterious “Grootvoete” — elephants believed to roam the forests of Knysna.

The Knysna Elephants: A Fascinating History
The Knysna elephants were first studied in detail by Nick Carter in 1969. During his research, he observed a large bull elephant named Champion and a pregnant female, Elderberry, in the Harkerville area. In 1970, their calf, Oupoot, was born, and the family was regularly seen near the N2 highway. In total, Carter recorded 10 elephants in the Knysna forest region.

By 1981, only three elephants were thought to remain. The skeleton of Champion, the bull elephant, was discovered in 1983 and is now displayed at the Forest Legends Museum in Diepwalle, north of Knysna. In August 1989, the skeleton of a female elephant was found in the Gouna area; carbon dating confirmed she had died in 1987, likely Elderberry. By studying the head creases and ear outlines, researchers could identify individual elephants, including Oupoot, who was also observed to have had at least one calf.

During the 1990s, two elephants were regularly seen in the Goudveld, Oubrand, and Diepwalle areas. One was very shy, mostly heard but rarely seen, while the other was more visible in the forest.

A 15-month study in 2016/2017 using camera traps across the 185-square-kilometre elephant habitat found only one female elephant remaining. Tragically, Oupoot was last seen in May 2024 on the farm of Oubaas Fourie in Karatara.

Explore Knysna’s Forest and Elephant Trails
For visitors to Knysna, exploring the Kringe in die Bos hiking trail and visiting the Daleen Matthee Big Tree offers a chance to connect with both the natural beauty and the literary legacy of Daleen Matthee. From mysterious elephants to ancient yellowwood trees, the Knysna forest continues to inspire locals and tourists alike.

Be careful of incoming tides and rocks.

The wreck has an interesting story. In 1902, a floating dry dock built in England was being towed to Durban. Near Mossel Bay, stormy weather broke the towing cables, and the dock ran aground at Glentana (then Mount Pleasant). Attempts to refloat it failed.

Most of the equipment was salvaged, but the metal plates and boilers remained. Several attempts were made to recover them, including using launches named Clara and Knysna, but both ran into trouble.

Today, the wreck sits in a small sheltered bay, making it a good spot for swimming and exploring for oysters.

The mission station, originally called Hoogekraal, was later named Pacaltsdorp in honor of Rev Pacalt, who died in 1818. He built a congregation of about 300 people and introduced farming, gardens, and livestock to the community.

The Cango Caves – Oudtshoorn
Just 29 km from Oudtshoorn, at the start of the Cango Valley, you’ll find the famous Cango Caves – one of South Africa’s great natural wonders.

The caves were formed in limestone millions of years ago and are filled with breathtaking stalactites (hanging from the roof), stalagmites (growing from the floor), and other rock shapes.

The San people once lived at the cave entrance and decorated it with rock art, but sadly most of it has been damaged over time.

The caves were first explored in 1780 by farmer Jacobus van Zyl. Early visitors used candles to light the way, but today modern lighting shows the caves in all their beauty.

To protect the caves, rules were made as early as 1820. The caves are now a protected historical site and managed by the municipality of Oudtshoorn.

The Cango Caves are divided into three main sections – Cango One, Two, and Three – and some areas are still being discovered. Guided tours take visitors deep underground to see the incredible natural formations that make this one of the top attractions in the Klein Karoo.

It is known for its history, engineering, and the scenic railway journey it offers.

Building the Kaaimans Bridge
The idea of a railway between George and Knysna began in the late 1800s. Construction started in 1925 under engineer NK Prettejohn, after decades of careful planning. To cross the Kaaimans River, a temporary bridge was made from long blue gum logs brought from Witfontein near George. Special wagons were used to transport these enormous logs.

The bridge itself was a feat of engineering, with caissons sunk 23 meters below the riverbed and eight-meter pylons rising above the water. Despite difficult terrain, bad weather, and labor challenges, the bridge was completed, and on 30 November 1928, the first train crossed the 210-meter-long Kaaimans Bridge.

Connecting Communities and Nature
The railway line helped transport timber from the Knysna forests and made travel between George and Knysna much easier. Later, the route became famous as the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe tourist train, attracting visitors from all over the world to enjoy the scenic train ride along the Southern Cape coast.

Preserving a Historic Landmark
In 1992, the bridge was declared a preserved railway. In 2019, it was named the National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark of the Year, recognizing its importance in South African engineering and history.

A Must-See Attraction in the Southern Cape
Today, the Kaaimans Bridge is more than just a railway bridge. It is a symbol of human skill, perseverance, and South Africa’s history. Visitors to George and Knysna can enjoy the beautiful views, the story of the engineers who built it, and the historic railway experience that connects the towns and the stunning Knysna forests.

It all started in 1876, when Mr. Hooper found a gold nugget in Karatara. Prospectors rushed to the area, and by 1887, Millwood was proclaimed a goldfield. A town soon grew with hotels, shops, churches, and even newspapers. But by 1888, the gold started running out, and many prospectors left for the big finds in the Witwatersrand.

Mining companies had brought in expensive equipment from as far as Australia, and tunnels like the famous Temperance Tunnel were dug. When the mines closed, many of the wooden buildings were taken apart and moved elsewhere, but traces of Millwood’s past can still be found in the forest today.

In the 1980s, the Millwood Goldfield Society helped preserve the area, and in 2010, SANParks took over its management. Now, Jubilee Creek and Millwood are peaceful picnic and hiking spots, where visitors can also explore the remains of mines and old structures.

This quiet bay is full of history and is perfect for families, surfers, and anyone who loves the sea.

A Little History
Victoria Bay’s story goes back to 1847, when people thought about making it a harbor. In 1858, Captain Pilkington surveyed the bay, but the harbor was never built.

In 1923, it was renamed Victoria Bay to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee. That same year, Bramwell Butler used his lottery prize to build a pier and tidal pool, which are still part of the bay today.

The Kaaimansriver Bridge and railway were built in 1928, helping people travel to the bay easily. Even after the 2008 storm damaged the railway and ended the Outeniqua Choo Choo train, Victoria Bay stayed a popular beach spot.

Places to Stay and Eat
Victoria Bay is small, with only 13 beach houses along Beach Road. Vicky’s Restaurant is a local favorite for meals and takeaway. There are also three campsites with good facilities, and nearby Seabreeze and Sea Glimpse resorts offer other places to stay.

One special house is Silverspray at No. 2 Beach Road, owned by the Horn family since 1950, where five generations have enjoyed the beach.

Things to Do
There is lots of fun for everyone. You can go surfing, fishing, spearfishing, or hiking. Anglers catch fish like Elf, Musclecracker, and Kob from the Jetty. Surfers love the pointbreak and beach break, and competitions are held here too. Lifeguards keep everyone safe while swimming.

Visit Victoria Bay
Whether you want to relax, play, or explore, Victoria Bay is perfect for a day out or a family holiday. Enjoy the beautiful beach, calm atmosphere, and fun activities for all ages.

Come and make special memories at Victoria Bay!

<rights>Copyright (c) 2024, Acorn Guest House</rights>
