Victoria Bay, once called Gunter Bay, is a beautiful small beach on the Garden Route, just 12 km from George. This quiet bay is full of history and is perfect for families, surfers, and anyone who loves the sea.
A Little History
Victoria Bay’s story goes back to 1847, when people thought about making it a harbor. In 1858, Captain Pilkington surveyed the bay, but the harbor was never built.
In 1923, it was renamed Victoria Bay to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee. That same year, Bramwell Butler used his lottery prize to build a pier and tidal pool, which are still part of the bay today.
The Kaaimansriver Bridge and railway were built in 1928, helping people travel to the bay easily. Even after the 2008 storm damaged the railway and ended the Outeniqua Choo Choo train, Victoria Bay stayed a popular beach spot.
Places to Stay and Eat
Victoria Bay is small, with only 13 beach houses along Beach Road. Vicky’s Restaurant is a local favorite for meals and takeaway. There are also three campsites with good facilities, and nearby Seabreeze and Sea Glimpse resorts offer other places to stay.
One special house is Silverspray at No. 2 Beach Road, owned by the Horn family since 1950, where five generations have enjoyed the beach.
Things to Do
There is lots of fun for everyone. You can go surfing, fishing, spearfishing, or hiking. Anglers catch fish like Elf, Musclecracker, and Kob from the Jetty. Surfers love the pointbreak and beach break, and competitions are held here too. Lifeguards keep everyone safe while swimming.
